No Compass? Use Your Wristwatch!

Hold a watch with 12 o’clock at left.
Move your arm so the hour hand points at the sun.
The spot halfway between the hour hand and the 12 is south.

Miniature Brazilian Horological Motorcycle Art

Brazilian, Jose Geraldo Reis Pfau and his miniature motorcycles made entirely of watch parts. The cases, movements, crystals, bracelets and bands are regurgitated into very appropriate representations of every conceivable style of motorbike.

57 year old Pfau makes the miniatures on the weekends as a hobby. His passion for motorcycles began in the sixties with the 1969 film, "Easy Rider." As stated on his website, "It is a personal collection and they are not for sale yet, but he hopes to be able to sell them in the future. He owns more them 200 miniatures at the moment. In the beginning the pieces were applied on wood frames to be hung on walls. They then became three-dimensional pieces, developing into sculptures as shown here."

Featuring everything from vintage bikes, dirt bikes, hogs, and choppers. There is even a series of famous movie bikes like the Harley Davidson "Captain America" from Easy Rider and the Norton 500 from The Motorcycle Diaries.

Urwerk on Steroids - Titanium Aluminum Nitrade Coated 103.08

Thanks to Ian, the moderator of the Urwerk Forum at Horomundi for this latest unveiling and information!

The TiAlN coated URWERK 103.08 - Harder than Steel!

TiAlN - Titanium Aluminum Nitride - treatment is well-known in industry for its exceptional properties. A TiAlN coating less than 4 microns thick has the effect of multiplying the resistance of the underlying metal to scratches, shocks, oxidation and even acids.

Its colour is dependant on the Titanium/Aluminium ratio and can range from melting bronze to stormy black.

For the very first time URWERK present their iconic 103 with a steel case and and not just any steel an incredibly hard TiAlN-coated steel. With this new model, URWERK blurs the frontier between horological art and cutting-edge technology. The coat of the steel 103.08 is the hardest yet known in the world of haute horlogerie.

"The TiAlN appears to have the gift of endowing supernatural properties to common metals like steel." Felix Baumgartner, master watchmaker and co-founder of URWERK

"TiAlN is a hard material which can be used as protective coating to enhance the lifetime of a variety of work pieces against mechanical or chemical attacks. The hardness of TiAlN is often between 30 and 40 GOa. In comparison, the hardness of DLC (diamond like carbon) is 20-25 GPa"
. Dr Ayat Karimi, Institute of Complex Matter Physics, EPFL, Lausanne.

While the 103.08 will not be a limited edition, only the first 50 watches will have the angular shaped crystal pictured here. After those first 50 'Launch Pieces', the shape of the crystal will revert to the standard curved shape.

Vintage Watching

This weeks edition of Vintage Watching features a 1970s Heuer (pre-Tag) "Chronosplit" LED/LCD combo, a vintage Wittnauer Sector double retrograde "Futurama", an early seventies LIP by Roger Tallon, and a 1969 Hamilton Chronomatic "Fontainebleau" chronograph. I've owned a version of each of these watches and regret selling each and every one of them...

Wyler Genève Chronograph

Some good shots of the new Wyler Genève Chronograph by Alex of Horomundi. When first seeing this watch introduced earlier this year, I didn't feel compelled to write about it, mostly because I didn't respond to it in gold. But seeing this titanium version, it just resonated a bit more. It's an enormous ergonomic 52mm case that "sandwiches" a carbon-fibre frame and shock absorbing system with visible titanium screws on the corners.

The Birth of Modern Horological Art

A very interesting article by Wei Koh for HH Journal about the recent and phenomenal growth of modern haute horology. He appropriately compares this new 'movement' to the cinema of the French New Wave and the art of the mid-century abstract expressionists.

"“What was true for the painters of yesterday is false for the painters of today.” - Umberto Boccioni

“I was always astonished how the industry was using 21st century materials and techniques to make 19th century watches. I say if we are going to use today’s materials and today’s technology then we have to make today’s watches.” - Richard Mille

“I am a watchmaker, my father is a watchmaker, my grandfather is a watchmaker. But I could no longer continue to repeat the past as they had. I had to find my own way.” - Felix Baumgartner, co-founder Urwerk

Horological Horticulture - 1970's Greenhouse Watch

Found an interesting vintage mechanical Lucerne that could double as a terrarium. I'm sure there's a geometric term for this shape but I must have skipped that day in high school. Similar to the Spaceman Audacieuse of the early seventies with it's anglular space age styling, unsure which came first. Transparent viewing from the sides and top allow the sunlight to germinate your hour flowers.

What? I won a Rolex Daytona?? Luckismo!

I don't mean to brag, but it's just really exciting. I won the grand (and only) prize in the Rolex Daytona Sweepstakes from Revolution Magazine. Part of their celebration and promotion of the US edition. It's a great magazine documenting the actual revolution that's occurring in modern horology.

Doubting it was true when first informed, partly due to a semi-vague Fedex letter stating "I may have won..." and requiring some documentation, proof of self, notarized signatures, etc. But after a little investigating of the company that was handling the Sweepstakes for Revolution, it was indeed no joke or scam, I won the watch! As Jack Forster puts it, "The Daytona of course needs no introduction as one of the most highly sought after watches on the planet, as well as one of the most technically distinguished chronographs in the world, employing the in-house cal. 4130 which is virtually unrivaled in robustness and serviceability."

Accepting the watch like a deer caught in headlights
Revolution Editors Matthew Morse, Jack Forster and me
They documented the day here-->Link

I want to thank everyone at Revolution, their online forum Horomundi, and whatever evil spirit that allowed me to win such a valuable and classic timepiece!

Yee Haw!
